Looking for a laid-back eatery on the Coffs Coast showcasing fresh, seasonal ingredients that’s loved by locals? Check out Ground Earth Café in the suburb of Woolgoolga, 25 minutes north of Coffs Harbour. Charismatic Chef and Owner Dustin “Dusty” Bowie-Ford and his partner Sasha Kennedy have created a warm and welcoming café where they hero local ingredients on their menu with a focus on sustainability.
Ground Earth Philosophy
Owners Dusty and Sasha have a clear food philosophy for Ground Earth “We believe that when enjoying food, these key elements must be present…Imagination, surprise, memory and emotion.” Ground Earth blends nostalgic flavours with fresh concepts in a quest to offer customers a wholesome, fun and balanced meal at Ground Earth.
The goal at Ground Earth is to use simple, humble and locally farmed ingredients to enhance the natural flavours in celebration of the vast and plentiful produce available in the Coffs Coast. On the menu, you’ll find nostalgic favourites with a modern twist such as smoked ham meatloaf or macaroni with hot smoked salmon alongside deluxe toasties. The café is bathed in morning sunshine with cosy furnishings inside to further enhance the feeling of comfort and nostalgia.
Mindful of waste, the menu at Ground Earth focuses on utilising every element of the chef’s chosen ingredient. In a quest to leave as small a mark on the environment as possible, Ground Earth recycle as much as possible including soft plastics and food waste, as well as providing ‘Borrow Bags’ in lieu of plastic bags and encouraging customers to use their own reusable coffee cups. In fact, Ground Earth have gone one step further and commissioned renowned potter Brooke Clunie of Red Door Studio Pottery & Gallery to create handmade ceramic takeaway coffee cups which are functional as well as fashionable.
Originally from Melbourne, Sasha says, “I’m still in awe of the abundance of sub-tropical fruits and vegetables available in this area compared to down south. For example, I can’t get enough of turmeric! We use it in juices, smoothies, hot drinks and even make a ferment from it. We have fantastic suppliers in this area who are passionate about sourcing the best products. We buy direct from a lot of local farmers and we even have our own garden plot in the community garden. It makes you appreciate your end product more knowing its humble beginnings.”
Ground Earth is open for breakfast and lunch 7 days as well as dinner on Thursday and Friday nights for authentic and wholesome coastal dining.
