the neighbouring hamlets of Lowanna and Ulong (Eastern Dorrigo) offer spectacular mountain views, waterfalls and National Park trails.
Lowanna and Ulong sit at 1700 feet and experience much cooler conditions than Coffs Harbour. The 45 min drive from Coffs Harbour climbs up the Dorrigo Mountain escarpment through towering subtropical rainforest, palms and fern trees and into the lush, undulating fields along the plateau. Keep your eye out for wildlife on this stretch of the road!
You’ll deserve a break when you reach the plateau. Turn off at Lowanna and for a bite to eat, or fill up with fuel at the Lowanna General Store and Box Car Cafe. Head to Ulong for coffee and cake by the fire at the Cafe in the Valley.
Nature lovers will want to explore the pristine waters of Little Nymboida River, Bobo River and Battery Falls, while the adventurous take on the trails of Nymboi-Binderay and Cascade National Parks. There is a range of cosy retreats and Bed and Breakfasts in the area, so you can take your time taking in the peaceful surroundings.
Once the centre for the local timber industry and gold mining, you’ll find traces of local history throughout the area. Happy exploring!
