Located on Gumbaynggirr Country in Coffs City Centre, Yarrila Arts and Museum (YAM) brings the region’s rich culture and creativity to life. A cornerstone within the cultural hub of Yarrila Place, YAM embodies its name. In the Gumbaynggirr language, ‘Yarrila’ means to illuminate, brighten, light up or illustrate, capturing the museum’s mission to highlight the community’s unique knowledge and cultural heritage. Come look inside YAM to connect with Coffs Coast’s artistic heart.
Welcome to Yarrila Place, the home of YAM
Designed by Matthew Blair of BVN Architecture, Yarrila Place is an architectural marvel that blends contemporary design with natural and cultural symbolism. The building was opened to the public in 2023, and its unique appearance sparks curiosity and invites exploration. Yarrila’s clever use of space encourages interaction and connection, allowing visitors to immerse themselves fully at every turn.
One of the defining features of Yarrila Place is that it integrates seamlessly with its surroundings, including the 150-year-old Hill’s Weeping Fig tree as a central element. This tree adds to the aesthetic appeal and symbolises the deep-rooted connection to the land and the community’s respect for nature.
Another striking feature of Yarrila Place is the public artwork installation by Emma Coulter, ‘Let Them Feel The Light‘. This steel and glass sculpture traverses an entire wall of the central atrium, symbolising the building’s role as a beacon of creativity and enlightenment. When it catches the light, it transforms the interior, visualising Yarrila Arts and Museum’s mission to illuminate knowledge and artistic expression.
