Coast Living is the NSW North Coast’s own glossy lifestyle magazine, with sections on food, shopping, wine, art, fashion, travel, homes, people and events. As always, the latest issue (No. 19/Winter 2008), which is available at news agencies now, features a number of interesting Coffs Coast-related articles.

Subtitled “The Home Issue”, the Winter 2008 edition of the magazine is all about the home. A dozen stunning North Coast homes are spread out for you to salivate over in a special feature covering 30 pages, with the rest of the mag staying with the ‘home’ theme by featuring more beautiful houses, modern kitchens and bathrooms, homewares, media rooms, and ecological and environmental products and tips for the home and garden.

In the ‘Designer Living’ feature, you’re allowed a close look at the stylish home of Kathy and Ralph Brauer from Coffs Harbour based furniture design company Bisque Interiors. Their hillside beach home at Sapphire Beach underwent a second renovation a few years ago and the post-makeover result is a modern home that merges the interior with the outdoors. Read how the designers went through a series of changes that resulted in an elegant outdoor cabana, pool and spa in an area that was once a tiny garden.

Two very special Coffs Coast homes are included in the magazine’s feature story. ‘Pandanus’ is one of the six properties that make up ‘Surfside Coffs Coast’, a boutique development in Woolgoolga. It offers open plan living areas, outdoor terraces and stunning beachfront views, while boasting a number of ecological and energy-efficient features. Away from the coast, ‘Orara Valley House’ is hidden away in the rolling green hills of the Coffs Harbour hinterland. With its rendered mud bricks in hues of sand, white and ochre, its beautifully aged timbers, and surrounded by water and cows, this beautiful country property is a feast for the senses. Plenty of gorgeous photographs accompany the stories.

‘Going green is easier than you think’ is Coast Living's conclusion after doing a number of stories in a section on environmentally friendly buildings, products and gardens. The article about Richard and Jenny Kelloway’s stunning home in Sawtell proves that you don’t have to compromise your love of style to build an eco-friendly house. The contemporary beach cottage incorporates concealed solar panels and a large rainwater tank in its clever design, among a number of well thought out environmentally friendly features.

Among the ’20 Great Things To Do This Winter On The North Coast’ are some fantastic ideas for getting out and about in the Coffs Coast region this winter.
Some of the events featured in the list are the annual Sawtell Chilli Festival (5 July), the annual Coffs Gold Cup racing carnival (3-7 August), a performance of Madam Butterfly by Oz Opera at the Jetty Memorial Theatre in Coffs Harbour (20 September) and the ever-popular Coffs Harbour International Buskers and Comedy Festival (26 September-4 October). These are just a small selection of what’s on in our region this winter – check the ‘What’s On’ event calendar on this website for more events!

Food is not forgotten in this home-themed issue. Among some of the yummy dessert recipes you can try out at home this winter is a beautiful oven-baked Belgian chocolate panne cotta with caramelised honey Murcott mandarins, by Ray Urquhart, head chef and co-owner of award-winning restaurant No. 2 Oak Street in Bellingen.

On the Creative Arts page, you’ll find information about an exhibition by James Gleeson, Australia’s foremost surrealist, at the Coffs Harbour Regional Gallery (on until 2 August), and read about the winter art collections at Sawtell’s Cooinda Gallery and Greenstone Studio Gallery in Emerald Beach.

In the Event Snapshot pages, you can take a peek at the people who attended the Coffs Coast Explorer Magazine Launch by the Coffs Coast Tourism Association this autumn, the Audi A4 launch at Bellbowrie Motors in Coffs Harbour, a VIP high tea event at Coffs Harbour’s Kennedy Jewellers and a fashion parade fundraiser for breast cancer at Emporium Bellingen.

Coffs Coast based landscape designer Claudia Nevell is featured in an article about garden design in our subtropical climate and the creative processes behind crafting unique and beautiful gardens. If you like gardening, there’s enough in this magazine to inspire you to go out there and get your fingers dirty in trying out some of the gardening ideas found in this issue.

‘Coast Living’ is published quarterly and is available at newsagents or via subscription. Contact the magazine on (02) 6651 5528 or email info@gopublications.com.au
