Our
region's rich history is told in the stories of gold miners and
timber-getters, ship builders and pioneer farmers. As you travel
through Coffs Coast, the historic streetscapes and folk museums
of many of our towns echo the past.
Coffs
Harbour The famous Coffs Harbour jetty precinct began life
in 1892 as a commercial wharf for the region - shiploads of cedar
and wool left here for markets in Sydney and beyond. Gold miners
landed here on their way to seek their fortunes in mountain mines
- all these stories and
more are told in the Coffs Harbour Historical Museum.
Bellingen
Heritage buildings grace the town's tree-lined main street - centrepiece
is the imposing Hammond & Wheatley building. Other historic buildings
- The Old Butter Factory and the Yellow Shed - now showcase the
art & craft of modern makers as well as antiques from the past.
Nambucca
River barges once carried loads of cedar down the Nambucca River
to loading wharves - at the Headland Historical Museum there are
memories of those hard-working days, in
Macksville, Mary Boulton's Pioneer Cottage opens a window on the
early days of settlement, while the amazing Bowraville Folk Museum
contains one of the nation's best heritage collections.
