Aboriginal Culture

There’s a reason that The Gumbaynggirr people have lived in the area for thousands of years, the natural assets of the region creating a wealth of food and resources. To present day this continues and there are a number of valuable sites, stories and people to help showcase this important culture. The Yarrawarra Aboriginal Cultural Centre is one such place.

The region offers some wonderful insights into the traditional customs and rituals of the Gumbaynggirr people as well as some sacred sites including Muttonbird Island, Look at Me Now Headland in Emerald Beach, the waterholes at Sherwood Nature Reserve near Woolgoolga and Bongil Bongil National Park south of Sawtell.
